2023 Colombian government partially reverses 2020 shark fishing ban, allowing local fishermen to keep accidentally caught sharks.

Environmental activists in Colombia are protecting endangered marine species, particularly sharks, around Malpelo Island, part of a large no-fishing zone. Since 2018, they have patrolled these waters aboard a catamaran, rescuing 508 animals, deterring 302 boats, and confiscating over 70,000 meters of fishing line. Despite a 2020 ban on shark fishing, the government partially repealed it in January 2023, allowing local fishermen to keep accidentally caught sharks.
