The Department of Conservation (DOC) has issued a warning to swimmers and beachgoers near the Mahia Peninsula, due to the risk of increased shark activity in the area. This warning comes after a pod of about 45 false killer whales and bottlenose dolphins stranded and were subsequently euthanized. The remains of these marine mammals may attract sharks, prompting the DOC's caution.
