34 non-target marine creatures, including a humpback whale, were caught in Lake Macquarie shark nets, with 28 dead; environmental groups call for modern deterrents.
34 non-target marine creatures, including a humpback whale, were caught in shark nets off Lake Macquarie beaches in the past eight months, according to data from the Department of Primary Industries. Out of these, 28 were found dead. Environmental groups are urging the NSW government to replace the nets with modern shark deterrents like SMART drumlines, alert systems, and drone surveillance, which are already in use on beaches and have been tested for over a decade.
