Madagascar's Vezo fishermen propose a large marine protected area to safeguard their resources and livelihood.

Madagascar's Vezo fishermen, known as "sea nomads," are taking steps to protect the Barren Isles, an archipelago off Madagascar's west coast. Facing a decline in fish numbers due to overfishing and climate change, the Vezo have formed a collective with Blue Ventures, a British nonprofit, to propose a 1,660-square-mile Marine Protected Area (MPA). This MPA would shield the islands from industrial fishing and oil/gas extraction while allowing traditional fishing to continue in designated areas. The project aims to preserve marine biodiversity and support the Vezo's livelihood.
