Former Los Angeles City Councilman José Huizar has begun a 13-year prison sentence for bribery and tax evasion, following his guilty plea in January 2023. He was involved in a $1.5 million pay-to-play scheme with developers and has been ordered to pay $444,000 in restitution to Los Angeles and nearly $39,000 to the IRS. His co-defendant, former Deputy Mayor Raymond Chan, received a 12-year sentence for facilitating the scheme.
