Illinois has nearly emptied the Stateville Correctional Center, following a federal court order mandating the relocation of inmates by September 30 due to hazardous conditions. The Illinois Department of Corrections has transferred hundreds of inmates to other facilities, leaving only a few in healthcare. Governor JB Pritzker's administration plans to rebuild Stateville and the Logan Correctional Center at a projected cost of $1 billion, aiming for completion in three to five years.
