Illinois closes Stateville Correctional Center for $900M facility construction.

The Illinois Department of Corrections will close the historic Stateville Correctional Center, known for housing notorious criminals, to construct a $900 million replacement facility. The aging prison, opened in 1925, faces a $286 million maintenance backlog and serious safety issues. Inmates are being relocated following a federal court order. Critics argue the closure will disrupt services and displace experienced staff during the construction, expected to take three to five years.
