Federal judge orders transfer of most Stateville Correctional Center inmates by September 30th due to hazardous living conditions.

A federal judge has ordered the transfer of most inmates at Illinois' Stateville Correctional Center to other prisons by September 30th due to hazardous living conditions. The ruling is the first step in the Illinois Department of Corrections' plan to close Stateville and rebuild it as part of a $1 billion project that also includes tearing down Logan Correctional Center and possibly rebuilding it. The project is expected to take three to five years, and the Illinois Department of Corrections has not yet provided a plan for the transition.
