Thailand has legalized same-sex marriage, becoming the first Southeast Asian country to do so. King Maha Vajiralongkorn endorsed the marriage equality bill, which will take effect on January 22, 2025, allowing LGBTQ+ couples to register their marriages. This landmark legislation, resulting from two decades of advocacy, grants same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples, including adoption and inheritance. Thailand is now the third Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage.
