The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in India arrested a Popular Front of India (PFI) member, C Shafeer, for allegedly sheltering the main suspect in the 2010 Kerala professor palm chopping case. Shafeer provided refuge to Savad, who was part of a PFI hit team and involved in the violent incident where Professor T J Joseph's hand was severed over an alleged mockery of Prophet Mohammed in a Malayalam question paper. Since the incident, 19 people have been convicted for various offenses, with the PFI being identified as a proscribed unlawful association targeting critics of Islam.
