Tsunamis, giant ocean waves mainly caused by earthquakes or submarine landslides, can occur on East and Gulf Coasts, contrary to popular belief. Meteotsunamis, caused by air pressure disturbances from severe thunderstorms, can also create waves affecting coastlines, lakes, bays, and inlets. While predicting these tsunamis is challenging, scientists are working to identify atmospheric conditions that could lead to their development.
