A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit off Japan's southern coast near Kyushu Island, prompting a local tsunami advisory but no significant damage was reported. The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 30 km. While tsunami waves of up to 50 cm were detected along parts of Kyushu's southern coast and the nearby island of Shikoku, the tsunami advisory was lifted from most coastlines except those along Miyazaki prefecture. The U.S.-based National Tsunami Warning Center assured that there are no tsunami threats in British Columbia following the earthquake.
