The Isle of Rum in Scotland becomes the first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in the country.

The Isle of Rum in Scotland has become the country's first International Dark Sky Sanctuary, recognized by Dark Sky International. The island's remote location and naturally dark night skies were key factors in receiving this designation, which is given to only 20 sites worldwide. The Isle of Rum Community Trust and NatureScot have worked together to protect and promote the island's night skies and environment, with future plans including the creation of a Dark Sky Tower with telescopes and an all-sky camera for round-the-clock online viewing worldwide. The sanctuary aims to protect the habitat of significant breeding populations of Manx shearwaters and other bird species.
