The Catlins in New Zealand's southeast is being considered for a dark sky reserve as visitor numbers increase to witness the southern lights. Owaka Going Forward, a local community group, presented to the Southland District Council for support in making this dream a reality. If accredited, the Catlins could benefit from increased ecotourism and support local nature, including a large native bat population.
