Australian OAIC halts Clearview AI investigation, maintains breach of privacy laws.

The Australian Office of the Information Commissioner (OAIC) has halted its investigation into US-based facial recognition firm Clearview AI, despite concerns over biometric data collection. While the OAIC still considers Clearview AI in breach of Australia's privacy laws, it will not pursue further investigations. OAIC's Privacy Commissioner, Carly Kind, said further action was not warranted at this time, but the initial determination against Clearview AI remains in effect. The OAIC plans to issue guidance for entities developing or using AI models, including generative AI, to address data scraping.
