2011 Congo mining bribery case: Swiss firm Glencore fined CHF 2M, ordered $150M compensation; no employee involvement or financial benefit found.

Swiss commodities giant Glencore has been fined CHF 2 million ($2.36 million) and ordered to pay $150 million in compensation over a bribery case involving Congo's mining industry in 2011. The Swiss Attorney General's office found Glencore International AG criminally liable for failing to prevent a business partner from bribing a Congolese official. Although Glencore did not admit to the findings, it will not appeal the ruling. The Swiss authorities did not find that any employees of Glencore had knowledge of the bribery or that the company financially benefited from it. This fine concludes investigations into bribery and corruption spanning six years across Europe and the Americas.
