Japanese researchers identify elevated blood NfL protein levels in early Parkinson's and dementia stages, potentially aiding patient identification and early interventions.

Japanese researchers from Nagoya University discovered elevated blood levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL) protein in early stages of Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. This finding may help identify patients and enable early interventions. The study also found changes in amyloid-beta (Aβ) and phosphorylated tau (p-tau) proteins in PD dementia and DLB patients. The findings suggest anti-Aβ antibody treatments for early-stage Alzheimer's could be effective in treating Lewy body diseases. The research was published in npj Parkinson's Disease.
