Researchers discovered Tau, a protein linked to neurodegenerative diseases, has a neuroprotective function.

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute discovered that Tau, a protein linked to neurodegenerative diseases, has a neuroprotective function. Tau mitigates neuronal damage caused by excessive reactive oxygen species or free radicals and promotes healthy aging. In this role, Tau assists in sequestering toxic peroxidized lipids from neurons, reducing oxidative damage and protecting the brain. This finding opens new avenues for treating neurodegenerative conditions by harnessing Tau's protective abilities.
