2027 India faces evening power cuts due to insufficient renewable energy for growing electricity demand.

A report from the India Energy and Climate Centre at the University of California, Berkeley predicts that India will face increasing evening power cuts by 2027 due to insufficient renewable energy-powered backup to meet rising electricity needs. Even with all planned coal plants and thermal power assets operational, India's electricity demand is expected to outpace supply, especially during evenings. To prevent potential shortages, the report recommends deploying more utility-scale solar plants and battery storage systems, which can store solar energy during the day and provide power at night. India's electricity demand has been growing rapidly, with a 7% increase in 2023 compared to the global average of 2.2%.
