58 WTO member nations have expressed support for a proposal from the African Group to reappoint incumbent Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second term. The African Group has requested that Okonjo-Iweala make herself available for another term and proposed initiating the reappointment process as soon as possible. Okonjo-Iweala, who assumed office in March 2021, has not yet declared her intentions regarding a second term.
