Vertex Pharmaceuticals sued the US government for permission to pay for fertility treatment for patients receiving its gene therapy, Casgevy, which can interfere with reproduction. The therapy requires high-dose chemotherapy, risking infertility. Vertex wants to cover the cost of fertility preservation procedures for patients on government health programs but claims the US views this as an illegal inducement to use the gene therapy.
