Henrietta Lacks' family sues Novartis and Viatris for unlawful profiting from HeLa cells without consent.

The family of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells were used without consent in medical research and development, filed a federal lawsuit in Maryland against pharmaceutical companies Novartis and Viatris, accusing them of unlawfully profiting from the use of Lacks' "HeLa" cells to create drugs without permission or compensation. This follows similar lawsuits filed against Thermo Fisher and ongoing litigation against Ultragenyx. The family seeks profits from commercializing the HeLa cells and a court order blocking the companies from using the cell line without permission.
