An excessive heat warning was in effect for around 36 million people, with numerous locations in the West and Pacific Northwest tying or breaking previous heat records. The National Weather Service has warned of a "major heat risk impact" even in higher elevations, with temperatures not expected to drop below 100 degrees until next weekend.
