200-year rapid evolution and global spread of deadly Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, primarily affecting those with lung conditions.
An international team of scientists, led by the University of Cambridge, has discovered that deadly bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, evolved rapidly over the last 200 years and spread globally, primarily affecting those with lung conditions. The study examined DNA data from nearly 10,000 samples, finding that 70% of infections were caused by just 21 genetic clones. This evolution and global spread are likely driven by changes in human behavior.
