Toronto woman Karima Manji sentenced to 3 years for committing Inuit identity fraud, exploiting Indigenous peoples.

Toronto woman Karima Manji, who is not Indigenous, was sentenced to three years in prison by a Nunavut judge for committing Inuit identity fraud. Manji's twin daughters falsely claimed Inuit status to receive benefits from two organizations, leading to a charge of fraud over $5,000. The judge went beyond the Crown's recommendation of two years jail, stating that Manji's actions were an egregious example of the exploitation of Indigenous peoples. Manji's daughters' charges were dropped after their mother pleaded guilty.
