5 members of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians were sentenced to prison for child abuse and neglect on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, with Trina Mae Johnson receiving the longest sentence of 216 months. The group, which included Johnson's three sisters and a man, caused serious harm to a child under their supervision through a foster care placement. The abuse involved withholding food, forcing uncomfortable positions, and physical assault. The case was jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Red Lake Tribal Police Department, and several local law enforcement agencies.
