A Senate staffer testified in a bribery trial that the planning for Sen. Bob Menendez's 2021 trip to Egypt and Qatar became "weird" after he directed that Egypt be part of the process. Menendez is accused of accepting bribes of hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold and cash in return for benefits for three New Jersey businessmen between 2018 and 2022. The allegations include helping Egyptian officials in exchange for one businessman gaining a monopoly on a halal certification for meat sent to Egypt.
