MSPs have approved the Scottish Government's plans to release over 500 prisoners early to ease overcrowding in Scottish jails. The move is necessary, according to the Scottish Prison Service, to protect the safety and welfare of both inmates and staff. Emergency release will happen in four waves from the end of this month. The Government has said there are around 550 prisoners eligible for early release under the proposals, with almost 65% of them due to be freed in the next 90 days.
