25% of early-released HMP Nottingham prisoners under UK's government scheme became homeless, leading to their recall.
A report by UK's Chief Inspector of Prisons reveals that 25% of prisoners released early from HMP Nottingham under the government's early release scheme to tackle overcrowding were homeless, leading to their inevitable recall to prison. The scheme, implemented last year, released over 10,000 prisoners 70 days early between October 2023 and June 2024. The report highlights the "enormous churn of prisoners" at HMP Nottingham and criticizes the scheme for its impact on release planning and staff. The Ministry of Justice has since replaced the old early release scheme with a new system that provides probation staff more time to prepare for a prisoner's release and offer necessary services upon their release.
