Study finds high xylitol levels linked to increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.
A study published in the European Heart Journal links high levels of xylitol, a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, and toothpaste, to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic analyzed over 3,000 patients in the U.S. and Europe and found that those with the highest levels of xylitol in their blood had a two-fold greater risk of experiencing cardiovascular events. The study suggests that xylitol may increase blood clotting, raising concerns about its safety as a sugar substitute.
