In a Phase IIB trial, a male birth control gel combining segesterone acetate and testosterone demonstrated faster sperm suppression than previous methods.
A new male birth control gel combining segesterone acetate (Nestorone) and testosterone has shown promising results in a Phase IIB trial, suppressing sperm production faster than other experimental hormone-based methods for male birth control. The gel, applied daily to the shoulders, reached the effective sperm count threshold of 1 million or fewer sperm per milliliter in 86% of participants by week 15, with a median time for sperm production suppression of less than 8 weeks. Researchers are continuing to study the gel's effectiveness, safety, acceptability, and reversibility after treatment ends.
