Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University outline a breakthrough in infertility treatment using in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) to turn skin cells into viable egg-producing cells.
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have outlined a breakthrough in infertility treatment, detailing a technique that turns a skin cell into an egg capable of producing viable embryos. The in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) method, based on somatic cell nuclear transfer, has been documented in a mouse model and could potentially benefit women of advanced maternal age, those unable to produce viable eggs due to cancer treatment or other causes, and men in same-sex relationships who wish to have genetically related children. Human trials are still years away.
