In Tanzania, a rare case of "mermaid baby" was born with a fused lower body and no genitalia, diagnosed as sirenomelia or "mermaid syndrome." The newborn, weighing 4.5 pounds, lived only about five minutes. Sirenomelia is an ultra-rare condition, with only a few recorded instances, and is almost always fatal; only 1% of affected babies survive more than a week after birth. The case was documented in a US medical journal.
