16-year-old boy died from drug overdose obtained from 70 doctors; coroner recommends real-time prescription monitoring by law to prevent "doctor shopping."
16-year-old boy 'LI' died from a drug overdose after obtaining pain medication from 70 doctors, prompting a coroner to recommend real-time prescription monitoring by law to prevent "doctor shopping." In the year before his death, LI managed to obtain 64 prescriptions from 31 practitioners, visiting 70 different doctors. A four-day inquest revealed 30% of clinicians are not using the prescription-monitoring system SafeScript, which could have prevented LI's fatal drug overdose.
