A Canadian study suggests that overprescribing opioids is directly causing misuse and overdoses in patients who do not dispose of medicines safely. Researchers from the Network of Canadian Emergency evaluated the ideal dosage at seven emergency departments and recommend adapting opioid prescription practices to patients' specific acute pain needs. The study follows 2,240 adults, with more than 7,500 opioid-related deaths in Canada reported in 2021.
