A study links Ontario's paper mill wastewater to increased mercury contamination in the Wabigoon River near Grassy Narrows First Nation.

A study from the University of Western Ontario suggests wastewater from a paper mill in Ontario is worsening mercury contamination in the Wabigoon River, which is near the Grassy Narrows First Nation. The sulphate and organic matter in the mill's wastewater contribute to increased methylmercury production, with fish levels potentially twice as high as without the mill discharge. The mill is upstream of the First Nation, which has suffered mercury poisoning for decades.
