Canada funds $12M, 10-year Indigenous-led health study on oilsands pollution impact in northern Alberta.
Canada is funding a C$12 million, 10-year health study led by Indigenous communities to investigate the potential impact of oilsands pollution on communities downstream of the Athabasca River in northern Alberta. The study aims to trace potential contaminants from oilsands operations and understand the long-term health and environmental impacts. Indigenous leaders have been requesting funding for such a study for over three decades, citing higher cancer rates and concerns about contaminants in water, fish, sediments, and wildlife in the area. Previous studies have demonstrated unsafe levels of arsenic, mercury, and hydrocarbons in the region.
