55-year-old Amy Appelhans Gubser becomes the first swimmer to cross the Gulf of the Farallones from San Francisco to the Farallones Islands, home to great white sharks, in the outbound direction. The challenging swim, covering nearly 30 miles in rough, cold water, took her 17 hours, 3 minutes, and 58 seconds. Gubser swam without a wetsuit, as required by marathon swimming sport rules.
