The UN's World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is nearing a landmark deal to combat "biopiracy," which involves the exploitation of traditional knowledge and genetic resources without consent. After over 20 years of negotiations, the draft treaty, if agreed upon, would require patent applicants to disclose the origin of genetic resources and the Indigenous people involved. The talks aim to put an end to biopiracy by enforcing greater transparency in the patenting system.
