A new international treaty, agreed upon by member states of the World Intellectual Property Organisation in Geneva, aims to prevent for-profit "biopiracy" of traditional knowledge. This involves companies patenting ideas derived from traditional knowledge. The Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge will require patent applications to disclose any involvement of traditional knowledge.
