Waituna Lagoon recovers from cyanobacterial bloom, water quality returns to normal.
The Waituna Lagoon in Southland, a significant wetland, has recovered from a cyanobacterial bloom threat, with recent tests showing water quality has returned to normal. Despite not having dealt with such a bloom before, Environment Southland chief scientist Karen Wilson expects the lagoon to regain ecological health over time. The lagoon, home to native birds, fish, and plants, had to be opened to the ocean in January to address the toxic algae issue.
