Alzheimer's scientists at UC San Diego identify lipid offloading in neurons, triggering microglial inflammation, and propose a strategy to target altered metabolism with drugs.
Alzheimer's scientists at UC San Diego have used advanced imaging technologies to reveal how lipid metabolism changes in Alzheimer's disease. The team discovered that neurons offload excess lipid droplets to microglia, triggering inflammation. Researchers also identified a strategy to target the altered metabolic system with new and existing drugs, published in Cell Metabolism.
