80-year-old Walter Gillespie, exonerated for a 1983 murder, dies months after acquittal.
80-year-old Walter Gillespie, who spent 21 years in prison for a 1983 murder he didn't commit, has died just months after he was acquitted. James Lockyer, the founding director of Innocence Canada, said Gillespie died on Friday. In January, New Brunswick Court of King's Bench Chief Justice Tracey DeWare acquitted Gillespie and Robert Mailman, 76, of the 1983 murder and apologized for the "miscarriage of justice."
