Saint John police face scrutiny as review of wrongful convictions remains unreleased a year later.
One year after Saint John Police Chief Robert Bruce announced a review of the conduct of officers involved in the wrongful conviction of Robert Mailman and Walter Gillespie for a 1983 murder, no report has been released. The review, commissioned by Bruce and conducted by a retired RCMP officer, has faced delays, raising concerns about transparency and accountability within the police force. Mailman and Gillespie were exonerated in January 2024, and Gillespie passed away shortly after reaching an undisclosed settlement with the New Brunswick government.
