Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed HB24-1074 into law on April 17, 2024, increasing penalties for harming or killing police animals, such as dogs and horses, from a misdemeanor to a Class-4 Felony. Those convicted will be held responsible for the costs of an injured police animal's rehabilitation and training a new K9 unit if the animal dies. The law was inspired by the killing of El Paso County Sheriff's Office K9, Jinx.
