North Otago couple sentenced to community work and supervision for illegally selling pāua under the Fisheries Act.
A North Otago couple, Sheryl Maafu (49) and Niuila Maafu (59), were sentenced to 360 hours of community work and 12 months supervision in the Oamaru District Court for illegally selling pāua under the Fisheries Act. They sold pāua meals through a Facebook site and used customary permits for fictitious birthday events to gather the seafood. The couple's vehicles and diving gear were forfeited to the Crown.
