Attorney General Josh Stein announced North Carolina has officially ended a decades-long backlog of untested rape kits, leading to over 100 arrests. The effort, which started seven years ago, saw more than 16,000 kits tested, resulting in over 5,000 DNA CODIS data submissions. The Survivor Act, a bipartisan law, played a significant role in prioritizing sexual assault kits and launching a kit tracker system, among other initiatives.
