A Tacoma police officer who was acquitted in the 2020 death of Manuel Ellis has been hired by the Thurston County Sheriff's Office. The officer, Christopher Burbank, was one of three cleared of criminal charges in the death of Ellis, a Black man who was restrained facedown on a sidewalk while pleading for breath. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office announced Burbank's hiring on its Facebook page, stating he will be a patrol deputy.
