A Stanford Medicine study found that a ketogenic diet improved metabolic health and psychiatric conditions in patients with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, who continued taking antipsychotic medications. The pilot trial followed 21 participants and showed that after four months on a ketogenic diet, none of them met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. Additionally, participants experienced improvements in blood pressure, body mass index, triglycerides, blood sugar levels, and insulin resistance. The psychiatric benefits included better sleep, greater life satisfaction, and improved energy, mood, and quality of life.
