2022 saw Canadian thermal coal exports increase by 7% to a near-decade high, despite a 2030 phase-out pledge.

Canadian thermal coal exports increased by 7% in 2022, reaching their highest level in nearly a decade, despite the government's pledge to end all thermal coal exports by 2030. In 2022, 19.5 million tonnes of thermal coal were exported through the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert, up from 18 million tonnes in 2021 and almost double the amount in 2015. Canada's coal exports have risen almost 20% since the Liberals made the commitment to phase out coal exports in 2019.
